Thank you Tori in 701 for bringing in your birthday present for us to see! The 3d pen was so cool! I wish we could get our 3d printer to work! :) Happy birthday!
For an upcoming super secret project that combines recycling and large scale installations, my Tuesday after school art class needs used (but still clean) plastic bags.
We all have them in piles and bags under our sink, so why not do some spring cleaning and bring them into school! Please put them in the bin on the 1st floor in front of the calendar. All shapes, sizes and colors are needed, just make sure they are clean! Thank you! We use pencils everyday in school, especially in art class. March 30th was a Sunday this year but next year we are going to have to plan a celebratory Nation Pencil Day Event! Check out the video from CBS's Sunday Morning show below. My friend Leah Mulartick is an artist, stylist, dancer and jewelry maker. A few years ago she bedazzled a phone case and her life changed. After she was walking around with what she made, people kept asking her where she got it. She decided to start a company that produces hand bedazzled iPhone cases, printed cases, jewelry and hair accessories. Her cases can be purchase at her website, http://www.blingblinghello.com/, and other stores including Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters and Free People. This past Saturday she hosted a Make Your Own Bling event at Rekover Projects, an art gallery in Greenpoint and I was lucky enough to attend! I got to choose my own colors and designs and bedazzle my own phone case! It was so much fun and I absolutely love the case I made. Check out the photos below! Every Monday I liked to come into class and share with my students an artistic experience I had over the weekend. This allows me to connect with my students on a deeper level and to show them how easy it is to have art in your life everyday. It teaches students about Cultural Institutions Public Art and Design Online Resources and Libraries, Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and Local Artists and Studios. It also shows students an Awareness of Careers in Visual Arts, Setting Goals and Developing Career Plans and how to experience Art for Enjoyment and Lifelong Learning. The Little Prince: A New York Story January 24 through April 27, 2014 Two weeks ago I went to see The Little Prince exhibit at the Morgan Library and Museum. It was such a wonderful show because it visually displays the process of a writer/illustrator from start to finish. The illustrations are so beautiful and the way Antoine de Saint-Exupéry made little changes to the structure of his sentences is such an important insight for students to understand self editing. I really enjoyed the show and the history of the museum. It is definitely worth a weekend trip especially with the upcoming April showers. Nadia Ackerman www.natchieart.com Last weekend I visited a flea market called Artists and Fleas, in Williamsburg. This is a really unique flea market because artists bring the work they have created to sell. Its great because so many of the vendors live in the community and are actual, real, working artists. While walking around I noticed an artist's work that I was really attracted to. I liked the subtle colors and tiny details of the illustrations. I also noticed that she used colored pencils, a material we often use in class. I started talking to the artist and learned that she is not only a visual artist, but a singer and songwriter. Her process is such that she writes song and then creates drawings based on those songs. When you purchase a piece of her work, you get the song lyrics that the piece is based on and a code to download the song from her website. I loved the idea of this process because it combined multiple mediums of art. I got one of her pieces and am trying to convince her to come into class and do a workshop with us! Hopefully she'll say yes! Check out her website in the title of this post. Big Fish by Nadia Ackerman
Check out this amaIng blog! We are going to do a similar project in sixth grade this year for sure! Agnes Martin is my favorite painter and this is my favorite quote of hers! Check out the rest of the paintings at thereconstructionists.org The MTA does a great job of commissioning and showing really cool artwork. I recently saw this piece on a Queens bound F train and was super inspired!
